The DAV Climbing Center in Augsburg hosted the inaugural official German Paraclimbing Championship on July 5–6, 2025, marking a significant milestone in inclusive climbing. This event coincides with the International Federation of Sport Climbing’s (IFSC) recent announcement that paraclimbing will be included in the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
Competition Format and Classifications
The championship followed a format akin to the Paraclimbing World Cup, featuring various classifications based on the type and degree of athletes’ impairments:
- B – Visual impairment
- AL – Leg amputation
- AU – Arm amputation
- RP – Neurological impairments
Each category is further divided by severity levels, indicated by numbers 1 to 3, with higher numbers representing lesser impairments. All routes were climbed using a top-rope system.
A notable addition to this championship was the introduction of an open classification, allowing participation from athletes without a valid classification or those deemed not eligible (NE or NE-MIC). This initiative aimed to broaden inclusivity and provide competition experience to a wider range of athletes.
Event Schedule and Competition Details
Athlete classification took place on Friday, July 4, involving assessments through interviews and motor tests to determine individual limitations. The competition on Saturday, July 5, featured six to seven qualifying routes per class, with two climbed in flash format – where routes are known in advance. Finalists then faced a single route in an onsight format, allowing only a six-minute collective inspection beforehand. Scoring was based on the height achieved, with secondary criteria applied in case of ties.
Looking Ahead to the 2028 Paralympics
The inclusion of paraclimbing in the 2028 Paralympic Games represents a historic advancement for the sport. German athletes Kevin Bartke (AU2) and Korbinian Frank (RP1) are already part of the extended Paralympic squad. National coach Christoph Reichert expressed optimism about Germany’s prospects, highlighting the potential for athletes to qualify and possibly secure podium finishes.
Promoting Inclusive Climbing
Beyond elite competitions, the German Alpine Club (DAV) is committed to fostering inclusive climbing at the grassroots level. Over 350 DAV sections offer inclusive climbing groups for individuals of all ages. Additionally, the DAV has been providing specialized training for climbing instructors working with people with disabilities for nearly a decade, with more than 80 trained professionals active across Germany.
The successful execution of the first official German Paraclimbing Championship not only sets a precedent for future national competitions but also reinforces the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in the climbing community.
